“The maps and instructions indicate that they intended four simultaneous detonations at JFK Airport, Yankee Stadium, Port Authority Bus Terminal, and Newark airport. Had they succeeded no doubt thousands of people would have been injured or killed, directly from the blast, the radiation, or the ensuing panic. And the economic implications from this attack are beyond my capability to estimate.” FBI Special Agent Corbbitt paused again. Many of those present thought he was through with his portion of the presentation. “One other thing. Several agents have called me within the last two hours. According to them, there has been some widely broadcast concerns about me acting in haste or using excessive force.” Suddenly the room was quiet again. “I just want everyone to understand. I am not some cowboy with a gun. Ms. Hafner warned me just before Ibrahim al-Din appeared. I recognized him from pictures of the FBI’s most wanted terrorists. I attended FBI training and recognized the type of actuator he had in his hand. "Furthermore, he had a cell-phone in a holder on his belt and since he was proclaiming ‘God is great’ the typical proclamation of those about ready to martyr themselves, I decided he wasn’t calling God on the telephone.” The television cameras zoomed in on his face and the anger in Corbbitt’s eyes was clear for the nation to see. “The danger was present. We were one button away from death and a major crisis. I killed that man and have no regrets about doing it. This was not some Hollywood movie. Ibrahim al-Din was not going recover and use his last moments of life to push a single button to kill my team members, other citizens, and reek havoc in New Jersey. “Those of you who want to Monday morning quarterback my decision to kill this man, go right ahead. Those of you who do, ask yourself what would happen if he pressed the button.” With that he left the microphones and Under Secretary Bayard stepped forth. “I believe Mr. Mills has some additional information for us. Go ahead Arthur.” |
