For Lack of Care

by David S. Rosenberg
One day a woman found herself all alone, when her husband of twenty-five years departed from her life.  She looked at the house and small farm that she must manage to survive.  She wondered what might happen if she should fail.

Then she noticed an old broken down horse nibbling at the grass by the road in front of her house.  She approached the horse slowly and the horse raised its head.  For a few seconds the their eyes met.

“You’re not much of a horse, but maybe I can make use of you,” she said.

The horse just tilted his head, but followed her back to the barn as if he already knew the way.
